In redesigning the covers for F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, This Side of Paradise, and Tender is the Night, my goal was to present these iconic works as a cohesive collection, capturing the spirit of their content without imposing a specific interpretation. I sought to inspire readers' imaginations rather than confining them, allowing the stories to evoke their own meaning. As Shigeo Fukuda once said, 'A cover design is like opening credits, and a back cover design is like closing credits.' This philosophy guided my approach, creating a visual experience that complements rather than limits the reading journey.
The redesign was created using photomontage, a technique that allowed me to combine high-quality images and environments with visual representations of key characters and figures inspired by Fitzgerald's writing. Each cover features meticulously selected images that evoke the mood and setting of the stories. layered with models and characters that mirror the emotional and thematic essence of the novels, symbolizing the inner worlds of the protagonists and their journeys. The juxtaposition of nature with the characters creates a dynamic visual narrative, encouraging readers to connect with the underlying themes of the novels while leaving room for personal interpretation. Through this approach, I sought to visually convey the depth and atmosphere of each story without dictating how the reader should perceive the text.
